The SOUND of Music

When we sing in the chorus room, we can experiment with all sorts of dynamics (do you remember what "dynamics" are?).    However, when we sing in the auditorium, all notions of dynamic variation go out the window.

Why is that?  What about the auditorium diminishes our sound as a choir?  How can we combat this problem?
